Welcome to Mount Vernon, Texas

Mount Vernon is a city in the county seat of Franklin County, Texas in the northeastern part of the state. The population was 2,662 at the 2010 census. The area was first settled in the mid-1840's, the first town was originally called Keith and was renamed Lone Star in 1850. Although the name was not officially changed to Mount Vernon until September 1875, the town was generally known as Mount Vernon much earlier than that. Mount Vernon is located at on Interstate 30 between Dallas and Texarkana.

Mount Vernon is a Type A General Law Municipality and operates under the Council-City Administrator form of government. The governing body is made up of a mayor and five council members. Length of office for council members and the mayor are two-year staggered terms. The City Council appoints the City Administrator, City Attorney, Municipal Court Judge and City Secretary. All other staff members work either directly or indirectly under the direction of the City Administrator.
